These are some of my latest pictures for my visual project which I have chosen as the better ones which I have taken.

I now need to go through all of the photographs which I have taken both interior and exterior and make two series which both give off the eerie feel which I want them to. I don't want to edit them too much however to get them all to look uniform I may have to edit them to a set colour temperature or even change them to black and grey.

Sunday 3 November 2013

I have taken some more images in my basement for my current visual project and below are some of the images I have taken (unedited):

I am yet to edit these images however I feel that if I do, it will take away the truthfulness behind these images and they are as they stand.

I have looked back at an old project from college which I based around abandoned buildings taking photographs in an RAF base which has given me some inspiration in my project moving it from creating 'false' scenarios in taking photographs of what is actually there. Some of the images from my previous project are here. All of which are unedited.

I have also taken a walk around The Forest Recreational Grounds at night similarly to my previous image:

I am also going to take photographs around here at night time alongside my basement images to try to create a sense of uneasiness but outdoors in a natural space rather than in a confined unused living space.

A website which I have been looking at based around 'urban exploration' and photographing unused and abandoned buildings is a forum called 28 Days Later found here. This is also something which I am going to try and look into further but for now I am concentrating on the unused space in my house, the basement, and The Forest.

#01
After my last images I uploaded onto here, I've been trying to work out in my own mind what it is that I really enjoy about photography and which style of photography it is to make me all that more interested in it. I still can't pinpoint exactly what it is however there are certain aspects within certain images which I can say interests me a lot.
  • a fear of the unknown
  • atmospheric scenes
  • unnatural sights
  • creepy subject matter

#02
A photographer's work I have found which I really like is that of Joshua Hoffine. His series of images based around childhood fears plays with the viewers mind making tales and myths from childhood actually come to life.

This is a phone image which I have taken near my house and it's of The Forest Recreation Ground. Walking through there the fog had covered the fields like a blanket and you could see ghostly silhouettes of people and trees in the fog. Walking past the trees they appeared to be fading into the background.

For the first project of my second year at university I am taking a step back from creating unrealistic scenes using Photoshop and concentrating more on what is actually there still aiming to keep an eerie atmosphere. The first set of images I have taken were in the basement of my house which is completely new to me and as I enjoy exploring new places, I felt this was a good opportunity for me to use what is at my disposal.

Going down into the basement raised many questions; 'what was there before?' 'who has been there?' 'what has happened in there?'. These came about from finding objects down there such as an old mattress, a portrait, an old fridge and a cabinet.

I took a skull candle down there due to shooting late at night, I had minimal lighting to use. I felt that this would give more of an atmosphere against the pitch black and also made a focal point.

These are two edits from the photographs which I have taken. Next time I am going to experiment with different lighting both natural and artificial, different perspectives and will also focus of small details such as cracks, peeling paint and holes.

Monday 8 July 2013

A very late university update but after having a bad last term, I've managed to pass first year with a 2:2 getting a high third and a mid 2:2 in my last two assignments which I am very pleased about!

Next year is a change; and I won't be leaving my work to the last minute. I am not settling for anything less than average this time.

Two more new images to go into my new series of self portraits.

Thursday 23 May 2013

Next image in my new series; going to shoot some more this week in outdoors environments to make my series a coherent piece!

My two new self portrait images for my latest university assignment which I have based around me and my emotions.
Any feedback would be helpful!

Thursday 16 May 2013

This term hasn't been a good one for me in terms of university work; I've lost all motivation to do work and have found myself in my own little motivation and emotionless bubble but these last two weeks I will pull it all back together.
Due in two weeks:

  • visual practice assignment
  • 2500 word essay
Once those are handed in that's my first year done and dusted with.

For now, here's one of my images for my visual practice assignment which I've chosen to do as self portraits.

Taken from my phone, this image is suppose to represent me coming through from a 'dark' time and breaking into the light and finding myself again. I need to produce more images which represent different emotions still and create them in a similar style.

Tuesday 12 February 2013

Today I had a small talk on the European Exchange part of my course which happens in my second year of study which I am extremely interested in doing! If I did make it onto the programme I could live in the country of my choice anywhere from 3 months this a year.

Three institutions I am interested in going to are
My next step is to research further into each of these institutions, the cities and create a personal statement and portfolio which I can give to my university that'll show my interest in applying for the programme! I need a first and second choice university.
Ideally I'd like one of the institutions in Germany but I will have to cross my fingers and see what happens.

I have also received my questions for my critical practise module this term and I have to produce a 2,500 word essay on.

Questions I feel I would be able to answer the best are:

1. Produce an interpretive encounter with a photograph making use of the concepts presented in lectures and seminars.

2. Is the purpose of documentary photography to persuade or to record? Consider this in relation to two documentary images of your choice.

3. Outline Szarkowski's Formalist program for photography and refer to specific photographs and photographers. Discuss the problems of Formalism and again refer to specific examples.

My next plan after this will be to write down miniature structures to each of the questions, see what texts and notes I already have on the texts that link to the questions and see then which would be the easiest afterwards.

There is nothing as mysterious as a fact clearly described.
Garry Winogrand

This is the starting point for my next visual practise module so with this in mind, I've been out and have taken a few rolls of film to see what I could come up with.

My aim was to go out and take photographs around Basford recording 'facts clearly described'.

Once these have all been checked over with my tutor, I will be hand printing them in the colour darkroom and hopefully using them towards my final selection of images. My next step is to return to Basford with a camera, some film and a 50mm lens to take more photographs and also work on some research looking at the likes of Walker Evans and William Eggleston.

Thursday 17 January 2013

I've been back at university two weeks this term and already I've had to do a presentation on a chapter based on photography as art in my critical practise seminar which took up the whole two hours. Even though I did critical practise in college, I'm beginning to enjoy it a lot more now at university; reading about different views and movements in both photography and art.

I've also been set my next assignment for my reps and cons module so I will do a proper update once I have images to show for it!
